Chapter 4 - The Forgotten Hero

Colonel Davis turned his back on the Prestons, addressing the entire room of neighborhood guests.

"To everyone gathered here today," Davis announced, his voice filling the hall with warmth and respect. "Command Sergeant Major Arthur Vance is not merely a resident of this community. He is one of the most decorated combat veterans in modern military history. Today was supposed to be a celebration of love, and the United States Armed Forces will not allow a true American hero to be dishonored."

Outside, four more dress-uniform officers entered the hall, carrying large velvet display cases lined with medals, including the silver-starred ribbon of the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart with multiple oak leaf clusters, and the Legion of Merit.

The neighbors and community members, who had spent decades seeing my father work quietly in their yards, rose to their feet as one. Thunderous applause erupted throughout the hall. Local shopkeepers, aunties, and mechanics cheered and clapped with tears running down their faces.

Dad stood beside me, overwhelmed, his hand clasped tightly in mine.

"Dad," I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder. "You never told me."

"When your mother was alive, Clara, she knew the war left scars on my mind," Dad said softly, kissing my forehead. "When I came home, I promised her I would live a quiet life of peace. Working the soil, watching flowers grow... it was how I healed. I didn't want glory. I just wanted to give you a normal, honest life."

Julian stood near the side exit, completely ignored, watching the standing ovation in absolute horror. He tried to speak, but the deafening applause drowned out every word he attempted to say.
