Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Trial

The following morning at 7:30 AM, Julian and his mother Victoria sat inside the high-rise boardroom of Apex Defense Technologies in downtown Silver City. Victoria wore dark sunglasses to hide her swollen eyes, while Julian nervously straightened his tie, clutching a leather portfolio of prepared apologies.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open.

The CEO, Marcus Sterling, walked in with four senior board members. But behind them walked two people that made Julian’s heart stop completely: Colonel Mark Davis and Arthur Vance.

Dad wasn't wearing his stained work boots or gardener's vest. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, wearing the crisp blue ribbon of the Medal of Honor neatly around his neck. I walked beside him in a professional navy dress, holding a sealed legal dossier.

"Mr. Vance... Clara..." Julian stammered, standing up immediately. "Please, sit down. Let us apologize for yesterday—"

"Sit down, Julian," CEO Marcus Sterling ordered coldly. "You are not conducting this meeting."

Sterling placed a thick document on the table in front of Julian.

"Pursuant to the Department of Defense Supplier Code of Conduct and Section 4 of our corporate charter, conduct that brings severe public disrepute and ethical liability to the firm results in immediate nullification of all executive titles and stock options."

"Mr. Sterling, you can't fire me!" Julian shouted, panic breaking his voice. "I brought in fifteen million dollars in logistics revenue last quarter!"

"And you lost us forty million in federal contracts in forty seconds," Colonel Davis stated flatly from across the table. "The Pentagon has officially disqualified Apex Defense from the regional procurement pool pending a comprehensive leadership overhaul."

Victoria jumped to her feet. "Arthur! You used to trim our hedges! You can't let them ruin my son’s life over a private family matter!"

Arthur looked up, his expression calm, steady, and unshakeable.

"A man who treats working people like dirt has no honor," Arthur said softly. "And a company that rewards men without honor has no future."
