Chapter 8 - Planting New Seeds

Three months passed, bringing the cool, crisp breeze of autumn to Silver City.

The Oakridge community center, which had once been a modest, peeling brick building, underwent a complete transformation funded by the new Vance Foundation. We added a modern community hall, a veteran vocational training center, and a beautiful greenhouse where retired servicemen and local youths could learn horticulture and sustainable farming.

Dad was in his element. He spent his mornings teaching young apprentices how to graft fruit trees and care for soil, wearing his favorite flannel shirts with his Medal of Honor ribbon framed proudly in the main foyer of the center.

One afternoon, while I was organizing supply orders in the community greenhouse, a young man in work boots and a navy sweater walked in carrying a crate of fresh rose seedlings.

"Excuse me," he said, offering a warm, respectful smile. "Are you Clara Vance?"

"I am," I replied, wiping my hands on my apron.

"I’m Captain Thomas Reed," he said, extending a calloused, honest hand. "I served under Colonel Davis in the 10th Mountain Division. The Colonel told me this foundation was looking for an operations manager for the new agricultural program."

Thomas had clear, steady green eyes and a kind, unassuming demeanor that immediately put me at ease. He spoke of his service with quiet humility and shared his dream of building community gardens for low-income neighborhoods across the state.

As we spent the afternoon potting roses together, talking and laughing under the sunlit glass of the greenhouse, I felt a deep, genuine peace I hadn't known in years.
