Chapter 8 - Uncovering the PastThe floor seemed to drop out from beneath me. The sterile hospital room vanished, replaced by the crushing realization that I had willingly handed the keys to my family’s sanctuary over to a predator.

"How is that even possible without my explicit knowledge of a sale?" I demanded, gripping the phone so hard my knuckles turned translucent.

"The power of attorney you signed granted her sweeping administrative authority over real estate management and estate restructuring," Marcus explained grimly, his voice professional yet laced with disbelief. "She didn't need to sell it; she executed an internal transfer of title under the guise of estate tax optimization. Unless you can prove coercion, forgery, or mental incompetence in a court of law, legally speaking... the house belongs to her LLC now."

"She forged the intent by lying about a trust fund," I countered fiercely. "That’s fraud."

"Fraud is notoriously difficult to prove when the signature on the notarized document matches yours, Ethan," Marcus warned. "And considering she was arrested tonight for domestic disturbance, she’s already retaining high-priced defense counsel. We need to move fast. If she files an eviction notice or initiates emergency child custody proceedings citing an unstable home environment due to your wife’s medical emergency, she could actually weaponize the courts against you."

Weaponize the courts.

Just like she had weaponized her presence in our home.

"What’s our counter-move?" I asked, my corporate engineering mindset kicking back in with cold, ruthless precision. If my mother wanted a war of attrition, I was going to give her a catastrophe she couldn't mathematically survive.

"First, we lock down all joint financial accounts before she drains them using the same power of attorney," Marcus instructed rapidly. "Second, we file an immediate injunction freezing the LLC’s asset disposition. And third... we dig into her past. People like Linda don't just wake up one day and execute a multi-layered financial and psychological trap. There’s a history here. Look into her previous real estate transactions, her previous marriages, anything."

"Consider it done," I said, cutting the connection.

I looked over at the bed. Megan was stirring softly, her eyelids fluttering open. I stood up, walked over, and gently kissed her forehead.

"Ethan..." she whispered, her voice rough. "Is Linda still in jail?"

"She’s locked up, honey," I said firmly, holding her hand. "And she’s never coming back into our lives. I promise you that."
