Chapter 3 - Forty-Two Floors DownI stood up so violently my executive chair tipped backward, crashing loudly against the carpeted floor. The sharp sound silenced the entire room.

"Ethan?" our lead partner, David Vance, started, leaning forward with a bewildered expression. "Is everything—"
I was already striding toward the heavy glass doors of the boardroom, my phone clutched in my trembling hand. My thumb flew across the screen with terrifying speed. First, I dialed a local Bellevue locksmith I had used during our home renovation.
"Change every lock on my house," I barked into the receiver, my voice trembling with a terrifying, controlled fury that left no room for argument. "Front door, back door, garage entry. Do it immediately. Bill me whatever it takes for emergency priority dispatch. I’ll meet you there in thirty minutes."
"Mr. Carter, I—", the locksmith started.
"Now!" I roared, stepping into the private executive elevator bank.
I hung up and instantly dialed 911.
"911, what is your emergency?" a calm dispatcher's voice answered.
"My name is Ethan Carter. I need an ambulance dispatched to my home right now," I said, rattling off our Bellevue address with breathless precision. "My wife is post-partum day fourteen, internal hemorrhaging caused by physical distress. She is bleeding out on the floor. And send the police—my mother is inside the residence and is actively endangering my family."
"Sir, stay calm, units are being dispatched right now—"
As the elevator plunged downward at high speed, descending forty-two floors toward the underground parking garage, I kept my eyes locked on the live nursery camera feed on my phone screen.
The scene unfolding in my home was a nightmare come to life.
Linda had walked over to the armchair by the window, sitting down comfortably with my crying son cradled in her arms, completely ignoring Megan, who lay curled in a fetal position on the floor, shaking uncontrollably as a spreading pool of dark blood stained the hardwood.
Then, Linda stood up, walked slowly back across the room, and leaned down over Megan’s trembling body.
Her face was a mask of cold, calculated cruelty. She lowered her head directly next to my wife’s ear and whispered something into it.
I couldn't hear the words through the camera's ambient mic, but I saw the immediate, devastating effect they had on Megan.
The color drained entirely from Megan’s face, leaving her looking like a corpse. Her eyes dilated with pure, unadulterated terror, and she stopped crying instantly, paralyzed by a shock far deeper than physical pain.
What could a mother possibly say to her injured daughter-in-law lying helpless in a pool of her own blood?

Whatever it was, it was designed to break her spirit completely.
And I was going to make sure Linda paid for every single second of it.
