Chapter 14 - Justice ServedThe federal trial, held in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, lasted less than five days.

With the security camera footage, the financial paper trails, the forged power of attorney documents, and the damning jailhouse audio recordings, the defense had virtually no ground to stand on.

When the jury returned with their verdict on a crisp Friday afternoon, the outcome was unanimous across all twelve counts.

Judge Harrison—who had requested jurisdiction over the consolidated federal and state cases—looked down from the bench with stern gravity.

"Linda Carter," the judge stated clearly, his voice echoing through the solemn courtroom. "You have spent decades manipulating the law, abusing familial trust, and destroying lives for your own narcissistic enrichment. You preyed upon your own son and your injured daughter-in-law with calculated, unprovoked malice."

He paused, taking a slow breath before delivering the sentence.

"For the crimes of grand larceny, identity fraud, domestic assault resulting in severe bodily harm, and conspiracy to commit international flight, this court sentences you to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."

The gavel fell.

Linda didn't scream this time. She sat motionless in her chair, her head bowed, staring blankly at the polished wooden table as federal marshals stepped forward to escort her away for the rest of her natural life.

The nightmare was finally, permanently over.
