Chapter 12 - The Safehouse"Mrs. Carter," Judge Harrison said, his voice cold enough to freeze boiling water. "Did you or did you not execute this deed transfer while your son was under the impression it was a generational trust fund?"

Linda stammered, opening and closing her mouth like a fish out of water. "I... Your Honor, it was for their own protection—"
"Save it," the judge interrupted sharply. "Not only is this emergency custody petition denied with prejudice, but I am also issuing a bench warrant for grand larceny, forgery, and elder/domestic financial exploitation based on the supplementary exhibits provided in this dossier."
He banged his gavel down with a deafening crack.
"Bail is revoked. Take her into custody immediately."
Two bailiffs stepped forward before Linda’s attorney could even open his mouth. As handcuffs were locked around her wrists for the second time in a week, Linda looked across the courtroom directly at me. Her expression was no longer confident or amused; it was a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You'll never be free of me, Ethan!" she screamed as she was hauled away through the side doors. "I built you! I can destroy you!"
"It’s over, Linda," I said quietly, watching her disappear.

That evening, I brought Megan and baby Noah home from the hospital.
The house felt different. It felt lighter, warmer, and truly safe for the first time since Linda had crossed our threshold. As I carried Megan gently across the front threshold, she leaned her head against my shoulder, a soft smile touching her lips.

"We’re really home," she whispered.
"We're home," I replied, kissing her softly. "And no one will ever hurt you here again."
