Chapter 7 - The Courtroom StormThree months later, the federal trial of United States v. Evan Sterling, Raymond Sterling, and Judith Sterling commenced at the United States District Court.

The trial was a media sensation. The gallery was packed with journalists, former colleagues, and curious spectators.

Evan, Raymond, and Judith sat at the defense table in bright orange federal jumpsuits. Without their tailored suits, manicured nails, and luxury cars, they looked gaunt, hollow, and utterly pathetic.

Their high-priced defense team tried every trick in the book, attempting to claim that Claire had voluntarily surrendered her assets and that the physical injuries were the result of an accidental fall.

Then, Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins called her star witness.

“The government calls Claire Vance.”

The courtroom went completely silent as the side doors opened.

Claire walked down the center aisle wearing an elegant navy suit, her hair pulled back neatly, her head held high. She didn't look like the broken girl I had found kneeling in the mud. She walked with the unshakeable grace of a survivor.

As she passed the defense table, Evan tried to catch her eye, mouthing the words, "Claire, please..."

Claire didn't even flinch. She walked right past him as if he were made of air, stepped up to the witness stand, and placed her hand on the Bible.

For three hours, Claire delivered her testimony. She didn't stumble. She didn't cry. With terrifying clarity, she described the three years of emotional isolation, the stolen dividends, the forged trust documents, and finally, the night she was thrown into the storm for buying a dress.

When Prosecutor Jenkins finished her questions, the defense attorney stood up to cross-examine her.

“Ms. Vance,” the attorney began in a patronizing tone, “isn't it true that your husband provided you with a five-million-dollar estate to live in?”

Claire looked directly into the jury box, her voice echoing loud and clear.

“My husband lived in my estate, paid for by my grandfather’s trust, while leaving me to freeze in the mud outside his door,” Claire stated. “He provided nothing but violence and greed.”

The jury stared at the defense table with absolute disgust. The defense attorney sat down, completely unable to ask another question.
