Chapter 3 - The Foundation Beneath Their FeetBy two o'clock in the morning, the rain had settled into a steady drizzle.

Claire was tucked into a heated bed in the private wing of Saint Jude’s Hospital, surrounded by warm blankets and receiving IV fluids. Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief trauma specialist, confirmed two cracked ribs, a severe concussion, and extensive soft-tissue bruising across her shoulders and back.

I sat in the hospital waiting room with my legal counsel, Victoria Vance, going through a thick leather accordion binder containing thirty years of real estate records.

“When Evan married Claire three years ago,” Victoria explained, pointing to a series of land deeds, “his family convinced Claire to sign a management agreement giving Sterling & Associates authority to oversee the twelve commercial properties her grandfather left her.”

“And what did they do with that authority?” I asked, my voice cold.

“They siphoned four million dollars,” Victoria revealed, sliding a forensic spreadsheet across the table. “Raymond used Claire’s property trust as collateral to secure personal loans for his struggling law firm. Evan bought his sports cars using her rental dividends, and Paige’s trust account was funded entirely by stolen rental income.”

I looked at the numbers. It was a systematic, calculated parasitical drain on my daughter’s inheritance. They hadn't just emotionally abused her; they were draining her dry so she would be completely dependent on them, unable to leave.

“Did they execute the final deed transfer?” I asked.

“They scheduled the closing for tomorrow morning at nine AM,” Victoria said, a cold smile touching her lips. “They were planning to sell her crown jewel asset—the downtown medical plaza—to an offshore shell company owned by Raymond’s brother.”

“Call Special Agent Reyes at the IRS Criminal Division,” I ordered, closing the binder. “Tell him I have a complete forensic paper trail of bank fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion ready for immediate seizure.”

Victoria picked up her phone. “What about the Sterling mansion?”

I looked out the window at the dark city skyline. “My security team is changing the locks at five AM. When the Sterlings wake up tomorrow, they won't even have a roof over their heads.”
