Chapter 7 - When Systems FailThe following afternoon, a sudden power surge struck the east wing of Boston Children’s Hospital during a severe thunderstorm. Emergency generators kicked in instantly across the intensive care units, but the sudden voltage spike caused the primary diagnostic server in the pediatric cardiac unit to crash.

Upstairs, Claire Caldwell’s heart monitor began sending erratic emergency alarms. The attending physicians scrambled, unable to tell whether her heart rhythm was failing or if the monitoring sensors were feeding corrupted data due to the power glitch.
Panic gripped the floor. The lead cardiologist shouted for an immediate backup diagnostic scan before authorizing emergency surgical intervention.
Downstairs in Imaging, Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed a portable, battery-powered ultrasound scanner—the very unit she had hand-calibrated and modified—and ran up four flights of stairs toward the cardiac ICU.
She burst through the doors of Claire’s room just as the medical team prepared to administer high-risk cardiac drugs.
“Stop!” Elena called out clearly, her voice commanding immediate authority. “The main server grid is reading false voltage spikes! Let me run a direct manual ultrasound scan first!”
Nathan stood near the doorway, his heart in his throat as Elena dropped to her knees beside Claire’s bed. Her hands were completely steady as she applied the gel, moving the transducer across the sleeping girl's chest with absolute precision.
Within seconds, a clear, stable image of Claire’s heart appeared on the portable monitor screen, beating in a healthy, steady rhythm.

“Her heart is fine,” Elena announced, turning to the doctors with relief flooding her face. “It’s just a sensor error from the server reboot.”
The room let out a collective breath of relief. Nathan sank into a chair, his eyes fixed on Elena as she gently wiped the gel from his sister’s chest.
