Chapter 4 - The Boundaries of PrideThe fragile peace shattered later that evening in the main lobby. Elena’s ex-husband, Ryan, arrived an hour late to pick up Mia for his scheduled weekend visitation. Carrying a worn guitar case over his shoulder, Ryan oozed practiced excuses—traffic was terrible, rehearsals ran long, his phone battery died.

Mia didn't cry or yell; she simply packed her plastic dinosaurs into her backpack with a quiet, hollow resignation that hurt Elena far more than an angry outburst would have.
Ryan noticed Nathan standing nearby in his immaculate suit. Shame quickly hardened into hostility. “So who’s the rich guy, Elena? You looking for a upgrade to pay your rent?”
Nathan’s jaw set, stepping forward instinctively to intervene.
Elena immediately raised her hand, her posture stiffening. “Don't, Mr. Caldwell. Please.”
She turned to Ryan, her voice icy, calm, and completely controlled. “You don't get to project your insecurities onto strangers, Ryan. You just need to show up for your daughter on time when you promise her you will.”
After Ryan stomped off with Mia, Elena stood alone in the hallway, her phone buzzing in her hand. Nathan could hear the faint, harsh voice of her landlord on the receiver, demanding overdue rent payments before Friday’s eviction deadline.
Every problem-solving instinct in Nathan’s body screamed at him to write a check, call his real estate attorneys, or buy the entire apartment building to wipe out her debt instantly.

“Elena, let me fix this,” Nathan insisted, taking out his pen. “It’s nothing to me.”
“No,” Elena said, turning to him with eyes burning with fierce, exhausted pride. “You don't understand what it feels like to be turned into a charity project for a rich man’s ego. I don't need a savior, Mr. Caldwell. I just need to survive on my own terms.”
