Chapter 7 - The Confrontation on the Sand

he final day of Daniel’s vacation was nothing short of a nightmare.
The hotel had downgraded their room to a standard garden-view suite after his cards failed
to authorize the security deposit. Vanessa was furious, refusing to speak to him and spending her
hours on her phone, likely looking for a way to distance herself from his sudden financial collapse.
As Daniel sat by the edge of the beach, his phone buzzed. It was an email from his managing
partner at the consulting firm.
*‘Daniel, we have received a detailed audit of your travel expenses from an external financial
manager. Effective immediately, your partnership is suspended pending an internal investigation into
corporate expense fraud. Do not access your company email or contact any clients.’*
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at the screen, his hands trembling. "No... no, no, no."
Within minutes, another email arrived. It was a formal notification from the landlord of the luxury
Seattle high-rise apartment he had secretly put a deposit on. The lease had been terminated because
the background check revealed pending litigation, and the holding deposit had been frozen by court
order.
Vanessa walked up to him, her beach bag packed, wearing a cold, distant expression. "I'm leaving,
Daniel."
"What?" Daniel stood up, panic rising in his chest. "Vanessa, wait. I can fix this. It’s just a
misunderstanding with the firm—"
"No, it's not," Vanessa said, stepping back. "I just got an email from HR. They know about the
expense accounts. They know about the Seattle lease. I'm not losing my career because you decided to
play stupid games with your pregnant wife. You told me she was weak. You told me she would never
find out."
"Vanessa, please—"
"I bought my own ticket home," she said coldly, sliding her sunglasses down. "Don't contact me
again."
She turned and walked away, her heels clicking against the stone path, leaving Daniel standing
alone on the white sands of Maui. The sun was hot, but he felt freezing cold. He had lost his job, his
mistress, his secret apartment, and his money—all in the span of forty-eight hours.
He looked at his phone, his thumb hovering over Claire's name. For the first time, he realized the
magnitude of his mistake. He had treated his wife like an amateur, forgetting that she was the most
dangerous professional he had ever met.
