Chapter 4 - The Selling of the Sanctuary

t 8:00 AM sharp, Claire’s phone rang. It was Eleanor.
"Claire, darling," Eleanor’s crisp, commanding voice echoed through the speaker. "I reviewed
the files you sent. Daniel is an absolute idiot. He left a trail of breadcrumbs so thick a blind accountant
could follow it. But tell me, what is our immediate move?"
"I want to sell the house," Claire said without a single tremor in her voice. "And I want it sold
before he gets back from Hawaii."
"The house is in your name, and your prenup is ironclad," Eleanor confirmed, a hint of amusement
in her tone. "In this red-hot market, an historic craftsman in this neighborhood will sell in forty-eight
hours if priced correctly. But are you sure you want to let go of your grandmother's home?"
"This house is no longer a sanctuary," Claire replied, looking around the spacious living room. "It’s
filled with his lies. I want a fresh start for my daughter. I’ve already contacted a real estate investor
group that buys properties in cash for immediate rental conversion. I spoke to them briefly at dawn.
They are willing to buy it as-is, with a twenty-four-hour closing period, if I slash the price by five
percent."
"Do it," Eleanor advised. "And what about the joint accounts?"
"He took the emergency fund, but there is still thirty-two thousand dollars in our joint checking,
which mostly consists of my consulting fees from last month," Claire said. "I am draining it. I’m
moving my personal savings to a private, unlinked account at a different bank. I’m also freezing the
credit cards he has access to under my primary account."
"Brilliant," Eleanor said. "I will draft the divorce petition immediately. We will charge him with
financial dissipation of marital assets, fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty. I'll have the process server
ready to hand him the papers the moment he steps off that plane. Or better yet, we can have them
waiting for him."
"No," Claire said, a cold plan forming in her mind. "I want him to experience the exact moment his
reality collapses. Let's make sure he has nowhere to go when he lands."
Within six hours, a representative from the investment firm arrived at the house. They walked
through the rooms, signed the cash-purchase agreement, and wire-transferred the full amount to
Claire's private trust account.
By the next afternoon, the house was officially no longer hers. She had three days to pack her
belongings and move into a beautiful, secure luxury apartment complex downtown—a place with a
twenty-four-hour doorman, secure elevators, and a state-of-the-art security system.
Daniel was still posting photos of himself surfing in Maui, completely oblivious to the fact that the
roof over his head had just been sold from under him.
