Chapter 3 - The Mind of an Expert

laire sat at her mahogany dining table, the glow of her dual monitors illuminating her face. She
had pulled her hair back into a tight, no-nonsense bun. The exhaustion that had plagued her for
the last three months was gone, replaced by the icy, laser-focused clarity she used to bring to federal
audit cases.
Daniel believed that because they shared a mailbox, they shared everything. He had completely
forgotten the legal structure of their life together.
When they married, Claire’s grandmother had left her a substantial inheritance, including the title
to the beautiful historic craftsman home they lived in. Before signing the marriage certificate, Claire’s
grandmother’s lawyers had insisted on a rock-solid prenuptial agreement. Daniel had signed it with a
laugh, calling it 'old-fashioned paperwork' and boasting that he would soon be making enough money
that her inheritance wouldn't matter.
But the deed of the house remained solely in Claire's name. It was an inherited asset, completely
protected from marital division.
Now, Claire logged into Daniel’s business portals. Over the years, she had helped him set up his
LLC for his independent consulting work, meaning she still held administrative credentials and
master keys to his financial structures.
Within two hours, Claire traced the forty-eight thousand dollars. It hadn't been 'invested.' Daniel
had routed it through a shell business account he’d quietly registered under Vanessa's name, then
transferred it directly to a personal travel agency to fund their luxury Hawaiian getaway and
purchase a down payment on a luxury high-rise rental in downtown Seattle.
Daniel was planning to abandon her. He was shifting funds to build a new life with Vanessa,
leaving Claire with a massive mortgage, a newborn, and an empty bank account.
But forensic accounting was the art of making hidden numbers scream. Claire began downloading
every single bank statement, invoice, and wire transfer from the last three years. She discovered that
Daniel had been underreporting his business income to their joint accounts while secretly funneling
thousands of dollars into personal offshore portfolios.
Even worse, he had billed several personal vacations with Vanessa as business expenses to his
primary corporate clients—a textbook case of corporate embezzlement.
Claire compiled every piece of evidence into a neatly organized, encrypted PDF. She labeled it:
*Daniel_Exhibits_A_through_F.*
At 4:00 AM, she sent the file to Eleanor Vance, the city's most ruthless divorce attorney and a close
family friend.
"Let's see how much you love paradise when you have to pay for it," Claire muttered, hitting send.
