Chapter 2 - The Proof in Paradise

y noon the next day, the illusion of Daniel's 'Chicago business trip' had completely shattered.

It began with a polite, automated email from his corporate office, CC’ing Claire as his

emergency contact. The email inquired why Daniel had missed his mandatory quarterly presentation

that morning. He hadn't checked in. He hadn't answered his work phone.

Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs. She was about to call the police when her phone buzzed

with a direct message from her lifelong friend, Nina.

*‘Claire, please tell me you’re with Daniel. Because if you aren’t, you need to see this right now.’*

Attached was a link to an Instagram story. Claire tapped it, her breath catching in her throat.

The screen filled with the brilliant, blinding turquoise of the Hawaiian ocean. The camera panned

across the white sands of the Mauna Lani resort in Maui. There, lounging on an oversized poolside

daybed, was Daniel. He was shirtless, laughing, holding a tropical cocktail. Next to him, wearing a

bright yellow bikini and a pair of designer sunglasses that Claire recognized instantly as her own, was

Vanessa Cole—the junior marketing executive Daniel had supposedly 'mentored' over the last year.

Vanessa’s hand was resting casually on Daniel’s thigh. The caption read: ‘Out of office. Paradise

with my favorite person.’

Claire felt a physical wave of nausea wash over her. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter,

her knuckles turning white. She tried calling Daniel. It rang once before going straight to voicemail.

He had blocked her.

Five minutes later, a text message popped up on her screen from an unsaved number. It was

Daniel’s personal burning line.

*‘Handle it yourself. I need to live for me. Don't make this ugly, Claire. You need me more than I

need you. Let’s be adults about this.’*

Attached was another photo of Daniel and Vanessa clinking champagne glasses.

Claire stared at the message. The sheer, unadulterated arrogance of it made her vision go sharp. He

thought she was helpless. He thought that because she was eight months pregnant, swollen, and

exhausted, she would sit quietly in their suburban home and wait for him to throw her whatever

crumbs of affection and money he had left. He thought he held all the cards.

He had forgotten who she was before she became his wife. He had forgotten that she didn't just

balance checkbooks—she was a licensed forensic accountant who had spent a decade dissecting

corporate fraud for federal investigators.

"You think I need you?" Claire whispered to the empty room. A cold, fierce smile spread across her

face. "You have no idea what you've just started."
