Chapter 6 - The Hawaiian Mirage

n Maui, the tropical breeze was losing its magic.

Daniel stood on the balcony of his ocean-front suite, his face flushed with anger as he tried

repeatedly to call his bank. The automated system kept giving him the same cold response: 'Your

account has been restricted due to suspicious activity. Please contact your primary account holder.'

"What do you mean, restricted?" Daniel yelled into the phone, slamming his fist against the railing.

"I am the owner of that account!"

"Sir," the representative's voice was polite but firm. "The primary account holder, Claire Vancesterling, has flagged the account for unauthorized out-of-state transactions and has initiated a legal

separation hold. We cannot release the funds without her written consent."

Daniel hung up, his head spinning. "Unbelievable. She’s actually trying to punish me."

Vanessa walked out onto the balcony, holding a fresh glass of champagne, her face tight with

irritation. "Daniel, the hotel concierge just told me our reservation card was rejected. They said we

need to provide a new card by tonight or they’ll lock us out of the suite. What is going on? You said

you had unlimited business credit."

"It’s just a temporary glitch," Daniel lied, trying to maintain his confident exterior. "Claire is

throwing a tantrum because I left for a few days. She’s frozen the accounts to get my attention. I’ll call

her lawyer and straighten this out. Don't worry about it, baby."

But Vanessa wasn't mollified. "I didn't come to Hawaii to get kicked out of a five-star resort, Daniel.

My reputation at the firm is on the line. If people find out we're staying here on company money—"

"They won't find out!" Daniel snapped, his stress finally breaking through his polished facade. "Just

give me a couple of hours."

He tried calling Claire again, but the calls went straight to voicemail. He sent angry emails, but

received only an automated reply: 'I am currently unavailable. For all legal and financial matters,

please contact Eleanor Vance at Vance & Associates.'

Daniel’s stomach dropped. Eleanor Vance was a legend in the family courts—a woman known for

stripping arrogant husbands of every dime they had.

"She wouldn't," Daniel muttered, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of his neck. "She doesn't

have the courage."

He looked out at the beautiful, blue Pacific Ocean, but the paradise he had run away to suddenly

felt like a gilded cage. The luxury was gone, replaced by the mounting, terrifying realization that he

was rapidly running out of money, options, and time.
