Chapter 8 - UNRAVELING THE PAST AND HIDDEN LEDGERS

With the internal mole neutralized, Enzo retreated into his private study to review the compromised security protocols, leaving me alone in the expansive library. Curiosity getting the better of me, I began organizing a stack of historical financial ledgers resting on a mahogany side table—documents detailing the early days of Moretti International before it expanded into a global conglomerate. As I flipped through the heavy parchment pages, a hidden compartment beneath the leather binding slipped open, revealing a faded polaroid photograph and a handwritten journal entry penned in Italian.

I picked up the photograph. It showed a much younger Enzo standing beside an older man who bore the unmistakable facial features of Lorenzo Russo, our bitter rival. The journal entry, dated over a decade ago, spoke of a bloody family pact, a betrayal orchestrated by the Russo syndicate that had cost Enzo his older brother, and a vow of vengeance that had shaped his entire life. The realization hit me like a physical blow: Enzo wasn't just running a criminal empire out of greed or ambition; he was trapped inside a generational war fueled by grief and a desperate need for justice.

When Enzo walked into the library and saw the open journal in my hands, he froze, his face draining of all color. For a tense, agonizing moment, neither of us breathed. Then, slowly, he closed the distance between us, taking the journal from my trembling fingers and setting it aside. "You weren't supposed to see that," he said, his voice uncharacteristically fragile. "That is the ugliness of my world, Elena—the history of blood that I spent my entire adult life trying to ensure would never touch you."
