Chapter 2 - THE FLIGHT HOME AND SILENT WALLS

The private jet back to New York hummed with a heavy, oppressive silence. Enzo sat across the cabin, his eyes fixed on a secure tablet, though I could tell he wasn't reading a single word. The events on the Monaco terrace hung between us like an electric wire stripped of its insulation. I busied myself with sorting through regional logistical reports, my fingers flying across my keyboard with a manic speed. I was trying to prove to him—and to myself—that the lapse in judgment on the terrace was a one-time anomaly, a momentary weakness induced by the Mediterranean heat and blinding sunlight. Yet every time I glanced up, I found his gaze lingering on me before he sharply redirected it back to his screen.

Hours bled into one another as we crossed the Atlantic under the cover of night. When we finally landed at Teterboro Airport just before dawn, a sleek black sedan waited on the tarmac. Marco stood by the open door, his expression unreadable, though a subtle stiffness in his shoulders showed he was still feeling the weight of the previous day's reprimand. I slid into the back seat, keeping a deliberate distance from Enzo, who climbed in right behind me. The ride into Manhattan was entirely devoid of conversation. The glowing neon lights of the city washed over the tinted windows, casting shifting shadows across Enzo’s rigid profile. He looked untouchable, an emperor carved from marble and unforgiving ambition.

When the car pulled up to the Moretti International building, Enzo stepped out into the crisp morning air without a single word of farewell, leaving me to navigate my desk and the looming mountain of Foundation gala preparations alone. I threw myself into the work with obsessive fervor, coordinating florists, reviewing catering contracts, and verifying security clearances for hundreds of high-profile guests. Yet, every administrative task felt hollow. My mind kept drifting back to the way Enzo had pronounced my name on the terrace, stripping away the formal 'Miss Russo' and replacing it with something raw and possessive. I knew instinctively that the fragile professional boundaries we had maintained for two years had permanently fractured, and there was no turning back.
