Chapter 7 - The Gentle Anchor

Over the following year, Marcus became an inseparable part of our lives.
He was everything Ethan had never been: humble, profoundly compassionate, steady, and grounded in an unshakable moral integrity. He visited every weekend, helping me assemble Clara’s wooden swing set in the backyard, reading bedtime stories to her until she fell asleep, and listening to my career goals with genuine, respectful admiration.
Watching Marcus hold Clara against his chest—looking down at her with pure, protective devotion—healed the lingering scars of my past.
One warm evening in July, while Clara was sleeping peacefully upstairs, Marcus and I walked along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan.
The water was calm, reflecting the twilight sky of deep rose, violet, and gold.
Marcus stopped, turning to face me, taking both of my hands into his.
"Elena," Marcus said, his deep voice thick with raw, tender emotion. "Two years ago, I promised you that no one would ever hurt you or Clara again. But watching you rebuild your life with such grace and courage made me realize something else."
He looked deep into my eyes.
"I don't just want to protect you, Elena. I love you. I love Clara as if she were my own flesh and blood. I want to spend the rest of my life building a fortress of happiness and peace for all three of us."
Marcus reached into his pocket, pulling out a velvet box. He opened the lid, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut sapphire ring surrounded by a halo of diamonds.
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled down my cheeks.

"Yes, Marcus," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times yes!"
Marcus lifted me into his arms, kissing me beneath the summer stars as the gentle lake waves washed against the shore.
