Chapter 4 - The Birth of Hope

At 3:42 AM, after five intense hours of managed labor, the loud, clear cry of a newborn baby echoed through the delivery suite.

"It’s a girl, Elena," Marcus smiled, his eyes shining with profound emotion as the nurses cleaned the infant and laid her gently onto my bare chest.

She had dark wisps of hair, delicate rosebud lips, and ten perfect fingers that immediately wrapped around my index finger.

"Clara," I wept, kissing her warm forehead. "Her name is Clara."

While I held my daughter, two detectives from the Chicago Police Department entered the observation room, accompanied by Marcus and hospital legal counsel.

Detective Sarah Miller took my sworn, recorded statement detailing the physical assault by Evelyn Hayes, the neglect by Ethan Hayes, and three years of systematic psychological and financial abuse.

Meanwhile, back at the Hayes estate, Ethan woke up at 8:00 AM, poured a cup of coffee, and walked into the kitchen expecting to find me cleaning the broken plates.

When he saw the puddle of dried red wine and the empty house, he frowned in annoyance.

He pulled out his phone and dialed my number, which went straight to voicemail.

"Elena," Ethan barked into the recording. "You've made your point with this childish tantrum. Get back to the house right now and make breakfast for my parents before I cancel your credit cards."

Ten minutes later, the front doorbell rang.

Ethan smirked, opening the door expecting to find a humbled, groveling wife.

Standing on the porch were four armed Cook County Sheriff deputies and Detective Miller, holding felony arrest warrants.
