Chapter 7 - WHISPERS IN THE FAMILY

When Dante returned to the penthouse late that evening, smelling of salt air, gunpowder, and stale coffee, I immediately handed him the phone and played the recorded voicemail saved by our secure system. As the distorted voice echoed through the master suite, Dante’s face drained of color, his expression hardening into the terrifying mask of the Black Lion. Without a word of hesitation, he pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my hair. "I told you I would keep you safe," he breathed fiercely against my neck. "And yet they found a way to reach your phone. This ends tonight." Dante immediately summoned Salvatore and Romano to the penthouse for an emergency council meeting in the private study. Standing by the window, I listened as Dante outlined a brutal, preemptive strike against the Moretti leadership, utilizing the financial vulnerabilities we had uncovered through Tommaso’s audit to freeze their legitimate front businesses across the city.
However, Salvatore raised a sobering objection. "Boss, if we hit their legitimate assets now, they will retaliate by exposing your private life—specifically, the existence of Mrs. Caruso and the unborn heir—to the federal task force currently investigating our union contracts. They are looking for any excuse to slap you with a RICO indictment." The room went dead silent. The syndicate had woven a complex web where defending our family openly could trigger our legal destruction, while hiding us allowed them to strike from the shadows. I stepped out from the shadows of the study door, my voice cutting through the heavy tension. "Then stop hiding me," I said firmly, stepping into the circle of powerful men. "If they want to use me as leverage, let them try to reach me in the open light, where we control the rules of the game."
