Chapter 14 - REBUILDING THE CROWN

As my pregnancy entered its ninth month, the sprawling Caruso estate transformed from a cold, heavily guarded fortress into a warm, vibrant home filled with contractors, interior designers, and family laughter. Salvatore and Marco oversaw the construction of a magnificent, sun-drenched nursery overlooking the northern gardens, while Dante personally vetted every single staff member, ensuring that our household remained an impenetrable sanctuary of absolute loyalty and peace. The nightmares of the cold convenience store, the cracked phone, and the three dollars in my wallet felt like a lifetime away—a dark prologue to a story that had finally found its true, unshakeable footing.

One quiet Sunday evening, while watching the sunset paint the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of gold and amber, Dante handed me a newly drafted legal document. I unfolded the heavy parchment with mild curiosity. It wasn't a prenuptial agreement, nor was it a corporate settlement. It was a brand-new marriage certificate, completely rewritten, with all old clauses expunged, bearing our signatures alongside new vows that promised absolute partnership, total transparency, and an unbreakable alliance against the world. "We never had a real wedding, Sophia," Dante said softly, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin gently on my shoulder. "Just a courthouse signature and a cold goodbye. When our daughter is born, I want us to stand before everyone we trust and do it right. No secrets. No hiding. Just us."
