Chapter 4 - SHADOWS OF THE PENTHOUSE

With Tommaso locked away, Dante turned his fierce, unyielding attention toward the logistics of my immediate safety, refusing to allow me to return to the studio apartment above the laundromat. Though I protested weakly, insisting I could take care of myself, Dante’s absolute refusal brooked no argument. Two days later, after the private clinic doctors officially cleared me for discharge under strict orders of bed rest and heavy nutrition, I was transported in an armored vehicle back to the Lake Shore Drive penthouse—the very place where my exile had begun months earlier. Walking through the double doors felt like stepping into a mausoleum of my former life. The floor-to-ceiling windows still offered the breathtaking, pristine view of Lake Michigan, but the silence inside was heavier now, haunted by the memories of the morning Dante had coldly handed me over to his cruel illusion of protection.

Dante had cleared the penthouse of his personal guards, replacing them with a discreet inner circle of trusted operatives loyal exclusively to my safety, and he had personally redesigned the master suite to accommodate my medical needs. Yet, despite the luxury, a wall remained between us. I slept in the guest wing across the hall, refusing to share his bed until the forty-eight-hour truce we had agreed upon in the clinic had passed and we could thoroughly dissect the lies that had fractured our marriage. That evening, as I stood by the window watching the city lights flicker across the water, Dante knocked softly on the open door, holding a thick manila folder containing the initial forensic reports of my intercepted settlement funds. "The financial audit on Tommaso’s personal accounts is complete," Dante said quietly, stepping into the room. "He didn't act alone, Sophia. Someone inside our inner circle paid him off to ensure you stayed away."
