Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE DON FOUND HER IN THE STREET

The fluorescent lights of the convenience store buzzed above me like angry wasps, illuminating the scratched lottery machine, the bent magazine rack, and my own pale, transparent reflection in the glass door. Standing near the counter with crumpled bills in my hand, I counted them for the third time: three dollars and forty-seven cents. Not enough for prenatal vitamins, not enough for a decent meal, and certainly not enough for the kind of life a baby deserved before it even had a name. Four months along, I pressed my palm over the slight swell beneath my oversized sweater, remembering the night of supposed reconciliation that had created this life. Dante had come home near dawn smelling of rain, smoke, and expensive cologne, kissing me like a man trying to memorize a woman he had already decided to lose. Two weeks later, the divorce papers arrived by courier with no phone call and no explanation—only a cold signature ending three years of being Mrs. Dante Caruso.

Stepping outside into the bitter October wind, the neighborhood offered no safety, only cracked sidewalks, shuttered storefronts, and the heavy silence of urban poverty. Sitting on a cold plastic bus stop bench, dizziness hit without warning as the streetlights smeared into long gold lines and my legs buckled beneath me. My knees hit the concrete, and darkness crept in from the edges of my vision. Then, brakes squealed, a car door slammed, and quick, purposeful footsteps approached. A voice cut through the night, speaking rapid Italian—a voice I knew better than my own heartbeat. Strong hands lifted me from the sidewalk, catching the scent of cedar, cigarette smoke, and danger. Dante looked down at me with raw, broken fear in his dark eyes, breathing out a desperate "Cristo" before lifting me into an expensive car and demanding his men move immediately. As consciousness slipped away into the warmth of leather seats and his hand resting on my forehead, I realized the most feared man in the city had just found his abandoned wife starving on a street corner.
