Chapter 9 - The Handcuff VerdictThe jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When they returned to the courtroom at three o'clock that afternoon, the foreperson stood up to read the verdicts.

GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS.

Richard Vale: Guilty of attempted homicide, felony elder abuse, grand larceny, and forgery. Beatrice Vale: Guilty of attempted homicide, felony elder abuse, false imprisonment, and conspiracy. Nolan Vale: Guilty of felony fraud, notary bribery, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.

Judge William Thomas delivered a scathing speech from the bench before pronouncing sentence.

“In my thirty years on the bench,” Judge Thomas stated, his voice trembling with quiet outrage, “I have rarely witnessed such cold, calculated, and monstrous cruelty executed by a victim’s own kin. You stripped a vulnerable senior citizen of his dignity, his freedom, and nearly his life, driven by unadulterated greed.”

He slammed his gavel down hard.

“Richard Vale: Sentenced to thirty-five years in state prison without parole.” “Beatrice Vale: Sentenced to thirty years in state prison without parole.” “Nolan Vale: Sentenced to twenty years in state prison.”

My mother screamed as female officers pulled her up from her chair, snapping heavy iron transport chains around her waist and ankles. My father collapsed forward onto the table, weeping silently, while Nolan was led away through the side door, his head bowed in utter shame.

As they passed the gallery, my mother turned her tear-streaked face toward me, her voice breaking into a desperate plea.

“Elena! Please! You’re my daughter! Tell them to stop!”

I stood tall in my dark blue police uniform, my posture straight, my eyes calm and unyielding.

I didn't answer her. I didn't yell. I simply adjusted my cap, turned my back, and walked out into the bright afternoon sunlight.
