Chapter 2 - The Badge Beneath the CoatThe silence in the backyard was shattered three minutes later by the wail of approaching sirens.

Red and blue strobe lights flashed through the trees along Ashford Lane, illuminating the rain in vibrant shades of crimson and blue. Four marked state police cruisers, an armored tactical unit, and an advanced life support ambulance tore up the circular driveway, their tires skidding on the wet gravel.

Nolan’s glass fell from his hand, shattering against the stone patio. “Elena... you’re... you’re joking...”

“Do I look like I’m joking, Nolan?” I asked, pulling my official gold captain’s badge and heavy SIG Sauer service weapon from my waist holster, pinning the badge prominently to my belt.

My father’s face drained of every drop of color. He stepped back toward my mother, who had come out onto the porch, her champagne glass slipping from her trembling fingers.

Lieutenant Marcus Vance—my second-in-command—leaped out of the lead cruiser before it even came to a complete stop. Six armed tactical officers fanned out across the lawn, their flashlights pinning my family against the house.

“Captain!” Marcus called out, running up to me with his sidearm held at low-ready. “Are you secure?”

“I’m secure, Marcus,” I reported, pointing toward the open shed door. “Victim is inside. Severe malnutrition, hypothermia, physical restraint injuries, and chemical sedation. Get the paramedics in here immediately.”

Two paramedics rushed past us with a gurney, disappearing into the dark shed.

My mother stepped forward, her voice rising into a sharp, hysterical shriek. “Officer! This is a private family matter! This woman is my daughter! She’s mentally unstable and invading our home!”

Lieutenant Marcus didn't even look at her. He turned to his officers, his voice cold as iron.

“Detain all three suspects. Secure the perimeter. Call the State Crime Scene Unit for a full forensic sweep.”

Four officers stepped forward, grabbing my father and brother.

“Get your hands off me!” Nolan screamed as an officer yanked his arms behind his back, snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. “Do you know who I am?! I’m a senior associate at Sterling Financial!”

“You’re a suspect in a federal elder abuse and fraud investigation, Mr. Vale,” Marcus replied, cranking the cuffs down tight. “You have the right to remain silent.”
