Chapter 3 - The Forensic SweepBy midnight, the Vale family residence was completely cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.

Floodlights illuminated the backyard as forensic techs in white Tyvek suits systematically documented every inch of the property. The stained mattress, the rope restraints, the plastic water bowl, and the forged padlock were tagged and bagged as key evidence.

Inside the house, my team was executing an emergency search warrant authorized by a state supreme court judge within twenty minutes of my call.

I stood in my grandfather’s former private study on the second floor, wearing protective rubber gloves, watching as my techs opened the floor-to-ceiling safe behind the mahogany bookshelf.

“Look at this, Captain,” Specialist Chen said, pulling out three thick leather binders. “This isn't just elder neglect. This is a complete corporate takeover.”

I took the binders, opening them on the oak desk.

My grandfather, Henry Vale, had built Vale Global Logistics into a hundred-million-dollar transportation empire before retiring ten years ago. He held seventy percent of the voting shares in a private family trust.

According to the documents in the safe, those shares had been transferred three months ago to Richard and Nolan Vale under a durable power of attorney stamped by a local notary named Greg Miller.

“Check the notary date, Chen,” I said, pointing to the bottom of the deed.

Chen cross-referenced the date on her tablet. “October 14th. That was the exact week Mr. Vale was hospitalized in ICU for a stroke.”

“He was under heavy medical sedation,” I said, my jaw tightening. “He couldn't hold a pen, let alone voluntarily sign over a hundred-million-dollar logistics company.”

The door opened, and Lieutenant Marcus walked in, holding a digital tablet.

“Captain,” Marcus reported. “The ER team at St. Jude’s just finished the preliminary tox screen on your grandfather.”

“What did they find?”

“High levels of unprescribed Haldol and lorazepam in his system,” Marcus said, his voice full of disgust. “They were systematically drugging him to keep him incoherent while they moved his personal bank accounts to an offshore entity in Nevis.”

I closed the leather binder with a heavy, final thud.

“They didn't just torture him, Marcus,” I said softly. “They were slowly killing him to ensure the trust couldn't be revoked before the annual board meeting next week.”
