Chapter 5 - The Mother’s DeedArthur opened his briefcase, laying out three distinct folders on the marble coffee table.

“Furthermore,” Arthur explained, a satisfied smile on his face, “I reviewed your mother’s original deed and your prenuptial agreement. Because Ethan attempted to lock you out of your sole property and committed a violent crime on the premises, we have filed an emergency motion to freeze all joint marital accounts.”

My blood ran cold with quiet satisfaction.

Ethan had been using my mother’s house to project an image of immense wealth to his corporate partners at Vance Financial. He had taken out a two-hundred-thousand-dollar business expansion loan, listing his status as co-owner of Elmridge Lane.

He had lied to the bank. He had lied to his firm. And now, the foundation of his entire life was crumbling into dust.

“What about Vanessa?” I asked, sitting down on the sofa, resting my bandaged wrist on a cushion.

“Vanessa Vale is a junior consultant at Ethan’s financial firm,” Arthur revealed, handing me a printout of corporate emails. “Our private investigator discovered that Ethan has been siphoning client investment funds to pay for her luxury apartment downtown.”

I looked at the documents, realizing the magnitude of the storm about to hit my husband.

He hadn't just thrown me down the stairs. He had handed me the key to his complete, irreversible destruction.
