Chapter 2 - The Cloud BackupTen minutes later, the door to my hospital room swung open.

Ethan entered carrying a bouquet of cheap store-bought lilies, a practiced expression of deep worry pasted across his handsome face.
Grace stood up, glared at him with pure hatred, and stepped into the hallway to call our family lawyer.
The moment the door clicked shut, Ethanâs mask of concern instantly dissolved. He threw the lilies onto the bedside table and stepped close to my pillow, his voice dropping into a harsh, threatening whisper.
âYou tell anyone I touched you, Clara, and Iâll tell the police and your family you were drunk,â Ethan murmured, leaning down until I could smell the stale alcohol on his breath. âVanessa saw everything. Her statement is already on record with the ER nurse. Who do you think theyâre going to believe? A respected senior partner at Vance Financial, or a hysterical wife?â
I lowered my eyes, trembling slightly under the covers, allowing him to believe I was broken and terrified.
âI... I just want to come home, Ethan,â I whimpered softly.
A triumphant, arrogant smile spread across his lips. He patted my bandaged forehead like a patronizing adult soothing an obedient child. He truly believed fear had made me submissive.

What he didn't know was that the house he was living in had belonged to my late mother long before I ever met him. He didn't know that our prenuptial agreement specifically excluded all pre-marital real estate from marital property division.
And he certainly didn't know that while he was threatening me beside my hospital bed, the audio recorder on my phone hidden beneath the pillow was capturing every single word.
