Chapter 8 - The Confrontation with Vanessa
While Maxwell worked to make amends in his private suite, Vanessa Hart was plotting her counter-offensive down on the twenty-sixth floor. Stripped of her operational oversight and burning with narcissistic humiliation, she had summoned corporate legal counsel and two disgruntled middle-management cronies to a clandestine meeting. “Max has completely lost his mind over a cleaning lady,” Vanessa hissed, pacing across her plush carpeted office. “He’s opening up historical liability archives that could expose our entire family trust to shareholder lawsuits. We need to discredit this woman, plant verifiable evidence of actual theft in her locker, and force Max’s hand before he hands over executive power to an outsider.” Her lead compliance lawyer, a slick corporate fixer named Henderson, adjusted his glasses nervously. “Ms. Hart, your brother controls ninety percent of the voting shares. If he wants to restitute the Carter family, no amount of internal maneuvering will stop him legally. Doing anything rash against a protected employee right now is corporate suicide.”
“I don't care about legal technicalities!” Vanessa snapped, slamming her fist against the glass table. “Find a way to terminate her contract by tomorrow morning, or I will leak manipulated financial audits to the Wall Street Journal suggesting Maxwell is embezzling foundation funds to cover up personal affairs!” Unknown to Vanessa, the entire conversation was being quietly recorded via an encrypted architectural audio feed tied directly into Maxwell’s master security terminal upstairs. As the audio playback finished echoing in his private office, Maxwell let out a cold, humorless laugh. He picked up his desk phone, dialed corporate security, and issued a single, decisive command: “Escort Ms. Hart off the premises immediately, freeze all her corporate access keys, and prepare termination papers for gross breach of fiduciary duty and attempted corporate sabotage.”
