Chapter 6 - The Weight of Survival

Down in the basement maintenance lockers, Evelyn sat on a narrow wooden bench, trembling as she clutched her battered purse. She had expected to be fired on the spot—or worse, arrested for daring to defend herself against the billionaire owner's sister. Yet, as the hours ticked by, no security guards came to escort her out, and her supervisor simply muttered an awkward apology before walking away.

Evelyn didn't understand the sudden shift in corporate weather, but she knew she couldn't afford to lose this job; her seven-year-old son, Leo, was due for his bi-monthly asthma medication refill, and the utility company had threatened to shut off their heat by Friday. Returning to her evening cleaning duties on the executive floors, Evelyn worked in tense silence, pushing her heavy cart past the glass-walled offices of the senior VPs. As she approached the forty-second floor, she noticed the lights in Maxwell Hart’s private office were still blazing. Hesitating outside the heavy double doors, she prepared to knock and empty his trash cans as protocol demanded, hoping to finish quickly and catch the late bus home.
Before her knuckles could tap against the wood, the door swung open, revealing Maxwell standing there in his shirtsleeves, his tie loosened, looking older and far more fatigued than any millionaire had a right to look. “Ms. Carter,” Maxwell said, his voice unusually soft. “Please... come inside. We need to talk.” Evelyn tightened her grip on her mop handle, her guard instantly shooting up. “If this is about the lobby incident, Mr. Hart, I’ve already surrendered my locker key. You can fire me, but you can't take away my dignity.” “I have no intention of firing you, Evelyn,” Maxwell replied earnestly, holding up his hands in a gesture of absolute surrender. “In fact, I want to ask for your forgiveness—on behalf of my sister, on behalf of my family, and most importantly, on behalf of a company that failed your husband when he needed us most.”
