Chapter 1 - The Bus Stop Shadow

Every morning at precisely 5:30 AM, the Number 16 bus groaned to a halt against the slush-covered curb three blocks away from Meridian Tower. Evelyn Carter stepped down onto the freezing concrete with her faded gray custodial uniform pressed as neatly as poverty allowed, her modest lunch wrapped tightly in a cloth napkin, and her eyes lowered toward the icy sidewalk.

Nobody inside the towering glass monolith of Hart Meridian Group knew her name, nor did they care to learn it.

They knew only the pristine shine she left behind on the expansive marble lobby floors, the faint lemon scent that lingered in the executive elevators before sunrise, and the miraculous speed with which conference rooms returned to flawless perfection before the executives arrived to clutter them once more. But Evelyn herself? She was merely a shadow equipped with a mop—a resilient mother who arrived before dawn, worked hours after most people had retreated to their suburban homes, and carried an old, battered brown purse against her chest as if everything breakable in her harsh life lived inside its frayed seams. From the forty-second floor, behind soundproof glass walls and solitary silence, Maxwell Hart had seen her arrive more times than he could count.

Yet, he had never truly seen her—a chilling truth that would soon come to fill him with profound shame. He had noticed her arrival patterns, the cold walk through winter winds, and the quiet dignity with which she entered a building that profited off her invisible labor.

Maxwell owned Meridian Tower; he owned the sprawling logistics empire his father had built from a single truck. His name was stamped across the corporate masthead, while Evelyn’s name was recorded on nothing. That crisp autumn morning, however, the fragile boundary between the executive suite and the lobby floor was about to shatter permanently with a single, malicious scream.
