Chapter 2 - The Public Humiliation

“Stop her right there! That woman has something in her bag that doesn’t belong to her!” The words cracked through the sunlit marble lobby like a crystal glass dropped from a high-altitude balcony. Evelyn froze two steps away from the revolving exit doors, her fingers tightening around the strap of her worn brown purse until her knuckles turned ghostly pale.

Around her, the morning rush-hour crowd slowed down, then ground to a complete halt. Security guards looked up sharply from their polished mahogany desk, and executive assistants turned around with coffee cups suspended halfway to their mouths. At the top of the grand staircase stood Vanessa Hart, Maxwell’s younger sister and the chief operations officer of the corporation. Dressed in cream Italian silk, sharp designer heels, and an air of untouchable arrogance, Vanessa descended the stairs slowly, visibly relishing the spectacle she was engineering. Her manicured arm extended, pointing directly at Evelyn. “Open the purse,” Vanessa commanded, her voice ringing clear across the cavernous room. “Right here. In front of everyone.” Evelyn felt her heart hammer violently against her ribs.

“I didn’t steal anything, Ms. Hart,” she whispered, her voice surprisingly steady despite the overwhelming tide of humiliation rising around her. “Then open it,” Vanessa retorted, her mouth curving into a cruel, triumphant smile. At that exact moment, the private executive elevator chimed softly, and Maxwell Hart stepped out into the lobby. Hearing the commotion, Maxwell paused, his slate-grey eyes scanning the frozen crowd. “What is going on here?” he asked, his low, commanding voice instantly restoring order to the room. Vanessa turned toward her brother with a practiced smile of righteous indignation.

“We caught one of the cleaning staff stealing inventory, Max. I’m simply enforcing company policy.” Evelyn looked up at the man whose signature appeared on every meager paycheck she had ever received, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of a thousand judging eyes waiting for her to break.
