Chapter 7 - Secrets in the Archives

Evelyn stared at the billionaire, her initial skepticism warring with the raw, unmistakable sincerity written across his face. She slowly stepped inside the sprawling office, lowering her cleaning cart by the door. “You mention my husband,” Evelyn said, her voice tight with suppressed grief. “What could a man in your position possibly know about what happened to Daniel after the fire?” Maxwell walked over to his desk, picking up a thick, leather-bound corporate ledger that had been retrieved from the deep archives by his security team an hour earlier. He opened it to a dog-eared page dated eighteen years ago. “When Daniel pulled me out of that warehouse fire, my father’s executive board promised him lifelong medical coverage and a guaranteed pension,” Maxwell explained, looking directly into Evelyn’s eyes.

“But when I was sent away to study international business abroad, my father’s corrupt payroll accountants quietly reclassified Daniel’s injury as a ‘minor workplace infraction’ to void his insurance payout, cutting off his medical stipends while he was fighting for his life in a county hospital.” Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat, tears blurring her vision as the final, missing pieces of her late husband’s bitter final years fell horribly into place. “He died believing the world was entirely cruel,” she whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. “He spent every night coughing up black soot, working illegal cash jobs just to buy his inhalers, while your family sat in these glass towers drinking champagne.” “He was a hero, Evelyn,” Maxwell said, his voice cracking with deep emotion as he stepped around the desk. “And my family committed an unpardonable sin against him and you. I cannot bring Daniel back, but I can ensure that every debt, every medical bill, and every hardship you and your son have endured because of our corporate negligence is erased tonight.” He slid a sealed golden envelope across the mahogany desk. Evelyn looked down at it, her hands trembling as she read the embossed corporate seal: Hart Meridian Executive Trust — Unconditional Survivor Restitution.
