THE BLUE THERMOS MIRACLE / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - Betrayal in the BoardroomAt 7:00 a.m. the following morning, Evan marched into the glass-walled executive boardroom of Mercer & Calloway Development.

Reid Calloway was already sitting at the head of the table, sipping espresso and reviewing the final demolition contracts with three corporate lawyers.

“Ah, Evan!” Reid smiled, pushing a gold pen across the glass table. “You’re just in time. Sign the final release for the St. Agnes parcel. The wrecking balls roll in at noon.”

Evan didn't sit down. He tossed the folder onto the table. “Cancel the demolition. We are altering the West Harbor master plan.”

Reid’s smile vanished instantly. “What are you talking about? That church sits on prime real estate for the commercial plaza!”

“We are building the luxury apartments around St. Agnes,” Evan declared, his voice resounding with total authority. “The church and community hall will remain untouched. In fact, Mercer Development will fund a full renovation of the community center.”

Reid let out a harsh, cruel laugh, leaning back in his chair. “Are you out of your mind? Your wife’s charity project has softened your brain! Do you know how much money we lose if we change the layout now? Tens of millions!”

“I don't care,” Evan said coldly. “It’s my decision.”

Reid stood up, his eyes turning dangerous. “It’s not just your decision anymore, Evan. While you were playing detective with your wife last night, I bought out two of our major board investors. I hold fifty-one percent of the voting power now. The demolition goes forward at noon—with or without your approval.”
