THE BLUE THERMOS MIRACLE / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary at St. AgnesInside the church basement, the air smelled of rich vegetable soup, warm bread, and damp coats. Dozens of people—struggling families, shivering homeless veterans, elderly residents, and wide-eyed children—were sitting at long wooden tables.

Grace tied a simple beige apron over her pregnant belly. She set the blue thermos on the center table, unscrewed the lid, and poured steaming hot, nutrient-rich broth into a massive pot of soup to enrich it.

She smiled warmly at everyone, serving soup, handing out warm loaves of bread, and checking on an elderly woman sitting near the radiator.

Evan stood in the shadowy doorway, frozen in complete shock. There was no secret lover. There was no affair. His wife—the billionaire’s spouse who could have spent her nights in luxury—was running a covert soup kitchen and food pantry for the poorest citizens of Chicago.

An old man in a worn coat looked up at Grace with tears in his eyes as she served him. “Bless you, Grace. Without this hall, half of us wouldn't survive the winter nights.”

Grace patted his hand gently. “You’ll always have a warm meal here, Arthur. I promise.”

Watching her from the shadows, Evan felt a sudden, crushing weight on his chest. St. Agnes Church wasn't just a point on a real estate map. It was the beating heart of a community. And he was the man who had ordered the bulldozers to crush it.
