Chapter 8 - The Clean SweepOver the next three months, the legal and financial destruction of Brandon Vance unfolded with terrifying efficiency.

With my father's legal team spearheading the prosecution, Brandon’s defense fell apart within weeks. His high-priced defense attorneys abandoned him when his personal accounts were frozen under federal asset-forfeiture warrants. The board of Vantage Capital voted unanimously to terminate his position, stripping him of all stock options and suing him for corporate fraud.
During his bail hearing, District Attorney Vance presented the medical records detailing my three broken ribs, along with testimony from our housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, who had courageously provided a full statement regarding Brandon dragging me down to the basement.
The judge, thoroughly disgusted by the severity of the violence and the clear flight risk posed by his financial crimes, denied bail entirely. Brandon was remanded to the county correctional facility to await trial.
Ashley, facing five years as an accessory to financial forgery and grand theft, agreed to a plea deal that required her to testify against Brandon in exchange for a suspended sentence and five hundred hours of community service. Her reputation in the design and corporate world was completely incinerated; no firm in the tri-state area would hire her.
Meanwhile, I moved into a stunning penthouse in Manhattan provided by my father's estate.
For the first few weeks, the physical recovery was grueling. My ribs required absolute rest, and the psychological scars of the betrayal often kept me awake late into the night. But every morning, my father would arrive at 8:00 AM, sitting quietly on the balcony with his newspaper, sipping espresso, making sure I never felt alone again.
"Why didn't you ever reach out to me, Dad?" I asked him one sunny morning as we sat looking out over Central Park. "All those years after Mom took me away?"
Vincent set his cup down, looking out over the skyline with soft, reflective eyes.
"Your mother wanted you to have a life without fear, Emma," he said quietly. "She wanted you to grow up without looking over your shoulder. I respected her wish because I loved her. But I swore to myself that if you ever needed me—if the world ever tried to crush you—I would tear down heaven and earth to stand beside you."
I reached across the table, taking his weathered, heavy hand in mine. "I'm glad you came."

"So am I, mia cara," he smiled softly. "So am I."
With my body healing and my spirit restored, I decided it was time to step back into the world—not as the quiet wife hiding behind a corporate executive, but as the sole head of my own global design empire.
