THE BLOOD OF MORETTI / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - UnlockedThe sound of the heavy deadbolt being forced open rang through the basement like a bell.

I looked up toward the top of the stairs as the heavy oak door swung wide. Bright, warm light flooded down the concrete steps, illuminating two large men in dark suits hurrying down toward me.

"Miss Moretti!" one of them called out, his voice filled with urgent respect. "Careful, don't move!"

They reached the bottom of the stairs and knelt beside me. The lead man, a burly broad-shouldered man named Marco whom I vaguely recognized from my childhood memories, gently slid his coat off and placed it over my shivering shoulders.

"Where are you hurt, Miss Emma?" Marco asked softly, assessing the blood on my lip and the way I was clutching my side.

"Ribs..." I managed to breathe out, tears of relief finally flowing freely. "I think... they're broken..."

"We have a medical unit outside," Marco said, carefully sliding his arms beneath my knees and back, lifting me off the cold floor with practiced ease. "Your father is upstairs."

As Marco carried me up the concrete steps, every movement pulled at my side, but the physical pain was overshadowed by the surreal realization that the shadows of my past had returned to pull me out of the dark.

We emerged into the brightly lit service hallway. As Marco carried me into the grand foyer, I saw the scene unfolded before me.

Brandon was pinned against the wall by Tony, his face turning a deep purple as he struggled for air. Ashley was cowering on the velvet sofa, trembling uncontrollably under the gaze of two silent men standing guard over her.

And standing in the center of the room was my father.

He looked older than I remembered—silver hair at his temples, deep lines carved around his jaw—but his eyes carried the exact same terrifying power that had once ruled entire boroughs of New York.

When his eyes met mine, the icy mask on his face instantly fractured.

"Emma," he murmured, taking a quick step toward us.

Marco gently set me down on the plush velvet armchair near the fireplace. My father dropped to his knees in front of me—a man who had never bowed to anyone in his entire life. His large, calloused hands gently took mine, his eyes scanning the dark purple bruise blooming along my jaw and the way I was holding my ribs.

"Look at me, mia cara," he whispered, his voice thick with a strange, heavy emotion. "You're safe now. No one will ever touch you again."

"Dad..." I sobbed, resting my forehead against his shoulder, smelling the familiar scent of old tobacco and expensive cologne. "He kicked me... he kicked me while I was on the floor..."

Vincent closed his eyes for three seconds. When he opened them again, every trace of human warmth had been completely erased.

He stood up slowly, turning around to face Brandon.

"Put him on his knees," Vincent ordered quietly.

Tony released his grip on Brandon's throat, throwing him forward onto the floor in front of Vincent. Brandon collapsed onto his hands and knees, coughing violently and clutching his neck.

"Please!" Brandon gasped, looking up at Vincent with wide, terrified eyes. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know who she was! She never told me about you!"

Vincent stepped closer, looking down at his son-in-law.

"She didn't tell you because she wanted to protect you from me," Vincent said softly. "She wanted a peaceful life. She chose a weak, ordinary man because she believed you were gentle. And you mistook her mercy for weakness."

Vincent nodded to Marco. "Bring the doctors in. Have them strap my daughter’s chest and get her into the limousine."

"No, Dad," I said, my voice surprisingly clear despite the pain as I looked up from the armchair. "I'm not leaving yet."

Vincent stopped, looking back at me with a raised eyebrow.

"I want to watch him lose everything," I said coldly.

A slow, prideful smile crept across my father’s face. "That's my girl."
