Chapter 7 - The Arrival of the LawAt 1:30 AM, three sleek black sedans bearing official state seals pulled into the driveway, followed by two Westchester County police cruisers.

District Attorney Richard Vance—no relation to Brandon—stepped into the foyer, flanked by senior investigators from the State Financial Crimes Bureau.
Richard Vance was a formidable prosecutor known for dismantling high-level white-collar syndicates. He walked straight past Brandon, who was still sitting defeated on the floor, and bowed his head respectfully to my father.
"Mr. Moretti," District Attorney Vance said quietly. "We received your file."
"District Attorney," Vincent replied, shaking the man’s hand with a firm, deliberate grip. "My daughter was physically assaulted, locked in a basement, and subjected to grand-scale financial forgery inside her own home. The evidence is on that flash drive."
Michael Ross handed the investigator a secure encrypted drive containing the full audio recording of my phone call, high-resolution photographs of my broken ribs taken by the paramedics, and the complete audit trail of Brandon’s forged loan documents.
District Attorney Vance reviewed the medical report on his tablet, his brow furrowing deep in anger. He looked over at Brandon.
"Brandon Vance," the DA announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "You are under arrest for felony domestic battery, unlawful imprisonment, first-degree grand larceny, and corporate forgery."
Two police officers stepped forward, pulling Brandon up by his arms and forcing his hands behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs snapping around his wrists sounded like absolute music to my ears.
"Wait! What about her?!" Brandon yelled, twisting his head toward Ashley. "She was part of it! She helped me hide the financial statements!"
Ashley shrieked as an officer approached her. "I didn't do anything! I was just visiting!"
"Miss Ashley Stevens," the officer said, pulling her off the sofa and securing her wrists. "You are being detained as a co-conspirator in an ongoing felony investigation."
As the officers began leading Brandon toward the shattered front entrance, he stopped, turning back to look at me one last time. His hair was wild, his eyes were bloodshot, and his expensive clothes were rumpled and torn.
"Emma!" he cried out, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Don't do this! You're ruining my life!"
I stood up slowly from the sofa, supported by Marco’s arm. I walked over to the doorway, stopping two feet from where he stood in cuffs.
"I'm not ruining your life, Brandon," I said, my voice steady, smooth, and entirely free of pain. "I'm just taking mine back. Take him away."
The officers dragged him out into the rain, shoving him into the back of the police cruiser. The red and blue lights flashed across the wet driveway as the cars pulled away, taking Brandon and Ashley into the dark night.
I turned back to look at the foyer. The broken oak door lay on the floor, the rain was drifting into the entryway, and the house I had spent ten years decorating felt completely hollow.

My father walked up beside me, placing a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder.
"Come home, Emma," he said softly. "Let the past burn."
