Chapter 7 - The Mother's ReckoningThree months later, the formal trial concluded in federal court.

Faced with the overwhelming mountain of forensic evidenceâthe basement hidden camera footage, the forged trust papers, the illegal prescription logs, and Claireâs unyielding testimonyâGrantâs defense team completely collapsed.
Grant Sterling pled guilty to federal kidnapping, grand larceny, wire fraud, and aggravated battery. Victoria Sterling pled guilty to notary fraud and conspiracy, while Dr. Harrison surrendered his medical license and pled guilty to felony distribution of controlled substances.
On the morning of sentencing, I sat beside Claire in the front row of the gallery.
Judge Thomas delivered a scathing speech from the bench before pronouncing sentence.
âGrant Sterling,â the judge declared, her voice cold and unyielding. âYou abused your position of trust, systematically brutalized your wife, and attempted to steal her family legacy out of pure, unadulterated greed. I sentence you to thirty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole.â
Grant collapsed forward onto the defense table, weeping hysterically as the marshals pulled him up.
âVictoria Sterling,â the judge continued, âyou are sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for your active role in this predatory scheme.â
As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around their wrists, Grant turned his head, looking at Claire and me with wild, pathetic eyes.

âClaire! Please!â Grant cried out as he was dragged toward the side holding door. âIâm sorry! Please tell them!â
Claire didn't say a word. She simply reached out, took my hand, and squeezed it tightly, watching calmly as the heavy iron door slammed shut behind her former husband, closing that nightmare forever.
