Chapter 2 - The Prosecutor's EyesAs the wail of approaching sirens echoed in the distance, a heavy shadow fell across the basement doorway at the top of the stairs.

Grant stood framed by the warm light of the kitchen. He wore his tailored charcoal suit, his silk tie loosened slightly at the collar, a leather briefcase hanging from his right hand. He looked like the picture-perfect corporate executive returning home after a long day at the firm.

He stopped, staring down into the dim basement at me, the crowbar, and his bound wife on the floor.

For two seconds, his face was completely blank—a sociopath’s mask resetting itself. Then his mouth twisted into a cold, arrogant smirk.

“You shouldn't be down here, Evelyn,” Grant said smoothly, stepping down the first wooden stair. “This is private property.”

“She’s bound with rope, Grant,” I said, my voice dropping into the low, deadly register I used when breaking corrupt politicians in cross-examination. “She has an ankle cable attached to a steel pillar. She’s malnourished.”

Grant took another step down, his eyes narrowing. “Claire has been having a severe mental breakdown. She’s addicted to prescription meds, Evelyn. I was keeping her safe until I could transfer her to a private psychiatric facility. I have the legal paperwork right here.”

He tapped his leather briefcase.

I stood up slowly, keeping my body positioned between Grant and my daughter.

“You forged her medical power of attorney,” I said, taking a step toward the stairs. “You forged her signature on the trust liquidation documents on that workbench.”

Grant let out a soft, mocking laugh. “You’re a retired prosecutor, Evelyn. You have no jurisdiction here. Who do you think the local police are going to believe? A respected partner at Sterling & Vance, or a hysterical mother who broke down my basement door with a crowbar?”

“They aren't local police, Grant,” I said quietly.

Outside, the screech of heavy tires echoed in the driveway. High-intensity searchlights flooded through the narrow basement windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Heavy boots thundered up the front porch steps, followed by the deafening crash of the front door being breached.

“FBI! FEDERAL AGENTS! STAY WHERE YOU ARE!”

Grant’s face drained of color. The leather briefcase slipped from his hand, bouncing down the wooden stairs and popping open on the concrete floor.

Dozens of legal folders spilled out—all of them bearing the official seal of the Federal Bankruptcy Court and my daughter’s forged signature.

My former lead investigator, Special Agent Marcus Vance, descended the basement stairs with six heavily armed federal operators behind him. Their tactical lights cut through the darkness, pinning Grant against the wall.

“Grant Sterling,” Agent Marcus announced, pulling a heavy set of steel handcuffs from his tactical vest. “You are under arrest for federal kidnapping, extortion, bank fraud, and aggravated assault.”

Grant’s hands trembled violently as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He looked at me, his arrogant composure completely shattered.

“Evelyn... please,” Grant stammered. “We can talk about this! It’s a family misunderstanding!”

I didn't answer him. I turned my back on him, kneeling beside my daughter as the paramedics rushed down the stairs with a stretcher.
