Chapter 4 - The Paper PaperworkBy three o'clock in the morning, the rain had returned, slicking the streets of the wealthy Oak Ridge neighborhood.

Victoria Sterling’s multi-million-dollar brick mansion sat at the end of a private cobblestone drive, surrounded by wrought-iron gates and manicured lawns. Lights were still burning bright on the second floor.

When three blacked-out federal SUVs pulled through the gates, Victoria herself opened the front door, wearing a silk robe and holding a glass of white wine. She was a woman who spent her life managing charity boards and pretending her family was royalty.

“What is the meaning of this ungodly disturbance?!” Victoria demanded, looking down her nose at the armed federal agents spilling onto her porch.

I stepped out of the lead vehicle, walking up the stone steps until I stood inches away from her.

Victoria’s eyes widened in recognition, then narrowed into a cold, elitist sneer. “Evelyn. I see you’re still playing the dramatic retired prosecutor. If this is about Claire’s little marital spat with Grant, I suggest you take your daughter to a counselor and stop embarrassing our family.”

I pulled a certified document from my coat and held it up to her face.

It was a forensic handwriting analysis report executed by the Treasury Department.

“Your notary stamp is on this document, Victoria,” I said, my voice icy and level. “You certified under oath that Claire appeared before you in person on October 12th to sign over her eight-million-dollar trust.”

Victoria didn't flinch. “She did sign it. In my office.”

“On October 12th, Claire was performing emergency pediatric surgery at St. Jude’s Hospital, witnessed by sixteen nurses and three chief surgeons,” I countered. “Her signature on this deed is a forgery executed by your hand.”

Victoria’s hand trembled slightly, her wine glass rattling against her rings. “You can’t prove that...”

Agent Marcus stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for federal notary fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.”

Victoria let out a sharp gasp as an agent grabbed her arms, pinning her against the mahogany doorframe. “Grant! Call the lawyers! Grant!”

“Grant can’t take your call, Victoria,” I whispered into her ear as the cuffs clicked shut around her wrists. “He’s currently sitting in a federal holding cell waiting for his arraignment.”

As they led Victoria down the steps in her silk robe, crying hysterically, my phone buzzed with a text from the second strike team downtown: [Dr. Harrison in custody. Sedative prescription ledgers seized.]

The entire house of cards was falling.
