Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the DoorThe emergency room at St. Judeâs Medical Center was quiet except for the steady, rhythmic beep of Claireâs heart monitor.

I sat in a vinyl chair beside her bed, holding her bruised hand while she slept under the influence of warm fluids and IV pain medication. The preliminary medical evaluation was a horrifying testament to Grantâs cruelty: severe dehydration, second-degree rope burns, two fractured ribs, and trace amounts of heavy sedatives in her bloodstream.
Agent Marcus walked into the room, holding two cups of black coffee. He handed one to me and leaned against the wall.
âThe forensic team just finished sweeping the house, Evelyn,â Marcus said softly. âItâs worse than we thought.â
I looked up at him, my jaw clenched. âWhat did you find?â
âGrant wasn't just hiding her,â Marcus explained, pulling a digital tablet from his coat. âGrantâs firm, Sterling & Vance, lost fourteen million dollars in an offshore cryptocurrency scam three months ago. He was facing federal indictment and total disbarment.â
I looked at my daughterâs pale face. âHe used her inheritance.â
âExactly,â Marcus nodded. âClaireâs father left her that eight-million-dollar irrevocable trust fund. Grant needed her signature to liquidate the principal to cover his embezzlement before the annual audit next week. When Claire refused to sign the transfer papers two weeks ago, he locked her in the basement and began systematically drugging her.â
Tears of pure, burning rage filled my eyes, but I forced them back. âWho else was involved, Marcus? A scam of this scale requires a crooked notary and a corrupt physician to write those sedative prescriptions.â
Marcusâs face darkened. âThe notary on the trust transfer forms is Grantâs mother, Victoria Sterling. And the physician who wrote the prescriptions for the sedatives is Dr. HarrisonâGrantâs uncle.â
A cold, deadly clarity settled over me. It was a family syndicate. The entire Sterling family had conspired to imprison my daughter, drain her fortune, and drug her into silence.
âWhere are Victoria and Harrison now?â I asked.
âVictoria is currently at her estate in Oak Ridge,â Marcus said. âDr. Harrison is at his private clinic downtown. They don't know Grantâs been arrested yet.â

I stood up from my chair, setting my coffee cup down with a sharp click.
âGet the arrest warrants ready, Marcus,â I said, adjusting my coat. âIâm coming with you.â
