Chapter 8 - Cracks in the Family SyndicateBefore Daniel could utter another word, the frosted glass doors at the main entrance of the conference room were pushed wide open.

Agent Reyes stepped into the room, flanked by six heavily armed FBI agents and two local police officers.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! STAY WHERE YOU ARE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!”

The two buyers immediately raised their hands, backing into the corner. Greg Miller sank into his chair, weeping silently as an officer stepped up behind him and snapped steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Agent Reyes walked up to the mahogany table, pulling out two official arrest warrants stamped with the seal of the United States District Court.

“Daniel Hale, Lorraine Hale,” Agent Reyes announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the room. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, elder financial exploitation, attempted murder through toxicological poisoning, and identity theft.”

An officer grabbed Daniel’s arms, pulling him up from his knees and pinning him against the glass window. The metallic click-clack of the heavy steel handcuffs snapping around his wrists sounded sharply through the silent room.

Daniel screamed as his arms were pulled behind his back. “Evelyn! Tell them to stop! You’re my wife! You can’t testify against me!”

I walked up to him until we were standing inches apart. I pulled my wedding ring off my finger and dropped it into his open, handcuffed palm.

“Spousal privilege doesn't apply to federal wire fraud and attempted murder, Daniel,” I whispered into his ear. “And our marriage ended the second I opened that back room door.”

Lorraine fought wildly against the female officer cuffing her, her expensive mink coat ripping at the seam as she screamed obscenities at me, at Margaret, and at the police.

“You won't get a cent of the money!” Lorraine shrieked as she was dragged toward the door. “We hid it in Nevada! You’ll never find it!”

“The Nevada shell account was frozen three hours ago, Lorraine,” I called out calmly. “And every dollar you stole from my company has already been returned to my account.”
