Chapter 5 - The Paperwork TrapFriday afternoon arrived with a dark, heavy downpour that slicked the city streets.

At 1:30 PM, Daniel and Lorraine walked into the plush, glass-walled conference room on the twelfth floor of the Downtown Financial Center. They were dressed impeccably—Daniel in a tailored dark suit, Lorraine wearing her finest pearls and a radiant smile.

Sitting across the mahogany table was Greg Miller, the corrupt notary, alongside two legal representatives for the buyer group. A thick leather folder containing the final closing documents lay open in the center of the table.

“Everything is ready, Mr. Hale,” Greg Miller said, adjusting his glasses and sliding the signature pages across the table. “Once you sign as attorney-in-fact for Margaret Hale, and your wife’s corporate guarantee clears, the three million dollars will be wired directly to your designated account in Nevada.”

Daniel picked up the heavy gold pen, his hands steady, his face glowing with absolute triumph. “It’s been a pleasure doing business with you, Greg.”

Lorraine leaned back in her leather chair, sipping sparkling water. “Finally. We can put that old house behind us and focus on proper investments.”

Just as Daniel touched the pen to the paper, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open.

The room fell dead silent.

I walked in first, wearing a crisp, ivory-tailored suit, carrying my leather briefcase.

And walking right beside me, holding my arm with steady, dignified grace, was Margaret Hale. She wore a clean wool coat, her white hair neatly styled, her sharp eyes fixed squarely on her grandson.

Daniel’s gold pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the glass table. Lorraine gasped, her champagne glass slipping from her hand and shattering on the carpet.

“Margaret?!” Lorraine shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. “What... what are you doing here?! You’re supposed to be in bed!”

“I was in bed, Lorraine,” Margaret said, her voice clear, resonant, and carrying to every corner of the room. “Until Evelyn saved me from the back room where you left me to starve.”
