Chapter 6 - The Medical EvidenceDaniel stood up so fast his leather chair crashed against the window. His face was gray, his eyes wide with wild, frantic panic as he looked from Margaret to me.

“Evelyn!” Daniel stammered, stepping toward me with his hands raised. “What is this?! Grandma is senile! She doesn't know what she’s doing! Who brought her out of the house?!”

“I brought her, Daniel,” I said, stepping between him and Margaret. “And she’s not senile. She was being systematically poisoned with high doses of heavy sedatives.”

I opened my leather briefcase, pulling out a thick binder of certified medical documents, and slapped it down onto the closing table directly in front of the buyers.

“This is a certified toxicological report from St. Jude’s Hospital, executed yesterday morning,” I announced to the room. “It proves that Margaret Hale had fatal levels of unprescribed benzodiazepines in her bloodstream—drugs administered without physician authorization while she was locked in your back room.”

The two legal representatives for the buyer group immediately stood up, pulling their hands away from the closing documents as if the paper were on fire.

“What the hell is going on here, Hale?!” the lead buyer demanded, glaring at Daniel. “You told us your grandmother was fully lucid and voluntarily executing this power of attorney!”

“She is! She did!” Lorraine screamed, stumbling out of her chair and clutching her pearl necklace. “Evelyn is fabricating this! She’s jealous because Daniel is consolidating the family estate! She’s an unstable woman!”

I looked at Lorraine with pure, unadulterated coldness.

“I am a Senior Federal Forensic Examiner, Lorraine,” I said softly. “And I don't fabricate evidence. I preserve it.”

I pulled my tablet from my bag and pressed play on the master audio recording.

The conference room speakers echoed with Daniel’s recorded voice: “Once Evelyn gets back from Chicago, she’ll be too busy cleaning up the old woman to notice the transfer until the escrow clears on Friday.”

Followed by Lorraine’s voice: “And when Margaret finally dies of neglect, we tell the police Evelyn insisted on keeping her here... They’ll believe the exhausted daughter-in-law before they ever suspect us.”
