Chapter 7 - The Surprise SubpoenaThe silence that followed the audio recording was deafening.

Greg Miller, the corrupt notary, turned pale as chalk. He quietly tried to slide his briefcase off the table and edge toward the side exit.
âI wouldn't touch that door, Mr. Miller,â Nina Parkâs voice called out from the doorway as she walked in, accompanied by two federal marshals. âThe side exit is blocked.â
Daniel backed up until his spine hit the floor-to-ceiling glass window. His arrogant corporate mask was completely gone, replaced by the desperate, sweating face of a cornered predator.
âEvelyn... please,â Daniel begged, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine. âWe can fix this! It was a mistake! My mother pushed me into this! She told me we needed the money for the business!â
âYou coward!â Lorraine shrieked, turning on her own son with wild, vicious rage. âI did this for you! You were drowning in debt! You were going to go to prison for embezzling from your own firm!â
âShut up, Mother!â Daniel screamed back, his face twisting in ugly panic. âYou were the one who bought the sedatives online! You were the one who forged Evelynâs signature on the corporate accounts!â
They were tearing each other apart right in front of the entire room, exposing every layer of their sick, greedy syndicate.
Margaret stood tall beside me, watching her grandson and daughter-in-law with a look of profound, quiet heartbreakâand absolute disgust.
âI gave you everything, Daniel,â Margaret said softly, her voice trembling with emotion. âI paid for your education. I bought your first home. And you locked me in a back room like trash to steal what little I had left.â

âGrandma, please!â Daniel dropped to his knees on the carpet, reaching out toward her with trembling hands. âIâm your grandson!â
âYouâre a monster,â Margaret replied quietly, turning her back on him.
