Chapter 7 - THE MANAGER’S MORAL CRISIS

Ryan, wracked with guilt and terrified of being implicated as an accessory to a heinous felony, returned to my hospital room late at night when Logan was scheduled to appear on a late-night talk show. He pulled a chair close to my bed, unaware that my eyes were wide open beneath the bandages, watching him through a tiny slit near my left eye.

“Maya... if you can hear me, I am so sorry,” Ryan whispered, his voice breaking with raw emotion. He placed a thick manila envelope on the bedside table. “Logan thinks he’s erased everything, but I kept copies of the wire transfers to the attacker. I kept the offshore receipts for Rachel’s new estate in the Hamptons. Here they are. Do whatever you need to do with them.” He stood up, kissed his fingers, pressed them gently against my blanket, and walked out of my life forever, leaving behind the smoking gun.
