Chapter 2 - RYAN’S SHOCK AND LOGAN’S COLD CALCULATION
I didn’t dare open my eyes or make a single sound. A terrifying instinct warned me to remain perfectly still, playing the part of an unconscious patient. Close to my hospital bed, muffled voices broke the clinical silence of the room. It was Logan, speaking with his longtime talent manager, Ryan. The tone of Ryan’s voice was laced with frantic, furious disbelief that contrasted sharply with Logan’s chilling composure.
“You could have just broken up with Maya!” Ryan yelled in a harsh whisper. “You could have canceled the wedding! Why on earth would you pay someone to do this to her?!” My heart stopped beating in my chest as the words hit me like a physical blow. Logan had not been a victim of a random, crazed assailant; he had orchestrated the attack. He had paid someone to douse my face in acid. Logan replied with a calm, clinical detachment that froze me far worse than the air conditioning. “Because if I dumped her a week before the wedding, the press and every fan would have hunted Rachel down,” Logan explained smoothly. “I needed Maya to be physically unable to show up. I needed the world to believe I was the devastated, heartbroken groom.”
