Chapter 8 - Unraveling Victoria's WebInside the warm, sunlit living room, Evelyn poured Ethan a glass of water while a seven-year-old girl with bright, inquisitive eyes peeked around the corner from the hallway. "Maya," Evelyn called out softly, her voice trembling. "Come here, honey."

The little girl walked in slowly. She had Emily’s smile—that rare, radiant curve of the lips that Ethan hadn't seen in nearly a decade. She didn't look like a terrified captive; she looked happy, loved, and safe. Evelyn sat down on the sofa, wringing her hands. "When the agency brought her to us eight years ago, we were told her mother passed and her father had abandoned her. Victoria Knight’s people facilitated everything through a private charity fund. But three years ago, I started finding anomalies in the paperwork—sealed court orders, redacted birth certificates. I hired a private investigator."
Ethan leaned forward, listening intently. "What did your investigator find?" "He found that Victoria Knight paid off the adoption agency to falsify documents, claiming the child was an orphan of a deceased soldier, completely erasing your existence and Emily’s family," Evelyn explained, her voice thick with anger. "We didn't know you were alive, Ethan. If we had known... God help us, we would have brought her straight to you."

Maya walked closer, staring curiously at Ethan. "Why are you crying, mister?" she asked innocently, tilting her head. Ethan’s heart shattered and rebuilt itself in a single beat. He reached out a trembling hand, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "I'm not sad, sweetheart," Ethan replied, his voice breaking with emotion. "I'm just... I've been looking for you for a very long time."
Evelyn placed a comforting hand on Ethan’s shoulder. "She knows she’s adopted, Ethan. We always promised to tell her the truth when she was older. But you need to know... Maya’s life is here. Her school, her friends, everything she knows." Ethan nodded slowly, looking at the pure joy radiating from his daughter. "I know. I'm not here to tear her world apart. I just needed to know she was safe... and I need her to know she was never abandoned."
